Message from Hon’ble Chief Minister

Creation and management of irrigation infrastructure is a key strategy to achieve the goal of “Haritha Andhra Pradesh”.    The flagship programme of  “Jalayagnam”  of Government of Andhra Pradesh aims at creation of additional irrigation infrastructure apart from modernization of existing irrigation systems, Major, Medium and Minor across the state, to add about 4 million hectares of irrigated area during  the period of five years (2004-2009), investing nearly rupees One lakh crores. Simultaneous emphasis on management of irrigation infrastructure would facilitate water release for tail end areas and optimization of agriculture output.

The investments in minor irrigation sector as part of “Jalayagnam“ would ensure the out reach of benefits equitably to far and nook of state.  This approach also ensures equitable distribution of benefits arising from the growth of economy. The state of Andhra Pradesh is planning an investment of about Rs.4000 crores during the next three years in minor irrigation sector which would create an additional ayacut of about 7 lakh acres and restore around 15 lakh acres.

The present project “Andhra Pradesh Community Based Tank Management Project” is part of this strategy and is formulated to ensure participation of farmers in tank management, and optimizing agriculture return.

Challenge ahead is to enhance the pace of development process of this sector with collective efforts.   All stake holders should gear up and fulfill the State Government commitment on “Jalayagnam”.
